PLENTZIA
Plentzia is a small town on the coast of Biscay, popular with tourists and year-round residents alike. The town is only a few kilometres from Bilbao and connected to the capital by Line 1 of the metro (50 minutes from Basauri, at the far end of the line).
Plentzia was traditionally a town of fishermen and shipbuilders, and became one of the most important ports and shipyards on the Cantabrian Sea. The natural surroundings are uniquely stunning, sitting, as it does, at the mouth of the Butrón estuary, and the 6 kilometre walk along the GR Trail 280 Uribe, from the Castle of Butrón to the sea.
The Bay of Plentzia has a special charm to be found among the winding streets and ancient buildings of the old quarter and in the small boats moored along the river. It is present in the buzz of walkers promenading by the sea and in the appetites awakened by the scents of its ever-present cuisine. And of course, on the beach – one of Biscay's most visited strands where you can swim or take part in numerous water-sports, such as surf, paddle board and canoeing.
The proximity to the sea naturally leads to a wealth of ancient maritime traditions and, of course, to an important culinary culture you simply must experience.
Another first for this town is the Underwater Winery – unique around the world – which offers its visitors tours and tastings, to discover the secret of fine wines rocked on the sea bed.
