Hace 80 millones de años el fondo del mar comenzó a fracturarse. Por las grietas ascendió el magma, que se enfrió in situ sin llegar a desbordarse, fragmentándose y formando estas particulares columnas de basalto. A día de hoy, llaman mucho la atención porque muestran una morfología muy característica con una geometría pentagonal, hexagonal o heptagonal casi perfecta.
